100 MOST COMMON WORDS IN ENGLISH

Remember that with a bit of grammar and a lot of vocabulary we can say many things! According to Wikipedia these are the 100 most common words in English in order from 1 to 100. How many of them do you already know?

WH- QUESTION WORDS

We use question words to ask certain types of questions. We refer to them as WH words because they inlcude the letter WH. This is the presentation we saw in class, I hope it helps you remember the question words in English.

WHERE ARE ENGLISH WORDS FROM?

Where are English words from?

From Old English
Many basic English words come from Old English, e.g. England, house, woman, man, child, bird, water. They sometimes have irregular pronunciation.

From Latin
Other English words come from Latin, e.g. family, wine, number, school, educate.

From French
Some English words come from French, e.g. royal, hotel, menu, beef.

From other languages
Today English is an international language. Thousands of English words come from other languages, e.g. siesta (Spanish), judo (Japanese).

New words
Every year hundreds of words come into English from new technology, e.g. Internet, text message, e-mail, modem.

HOW TO FORM THE PLURAL

Are you good at forming the plural of the nouns? In case you need some extra help this is a presentation for you to review how to make singular nouns plural. If you download it to your computer you will see it better.

Now it's time to practise! Look up the words you don't understand in the dictionary and you will learn more vocabulary.

THIS - THAT - THESE - THOSE

There are 4 demonstratives that, this, these and those. They are used to state the distance from the speaker.

    * "This" is used for singular nouns that are close to the speaker.

    * "That" is used for singular nouns that are far from the speaker.

    * "These" is used for plural nouns that are close to the speaker.

    * "Those" is used for plural nouns that are far from the speaker.

How good are you at using them? You can test yourself now. Take your notebook and a pen or pencil and go ahead!

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES

My, your, his, her, its, our and their are the possessive adjectives in English. They are used before a noun to show possession.

Examples:
This is my book
Her name is Jane
He is happy with his family
They like their house very much

Possible answers:
